2010 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A standard among full-size suvs. introductionthe ford expedition is a full-size sport-utility vehicle. It seats up to eight people, hauls a mountain of gear, and tows moderately heavy trailers. The second- and third-row seats fold flat to create a useful rear cargo area. That's nice on long drives.  changes for 2010 are minimal. There is the mykey programmable vehicle key, the availability of the sync voice-activated communications and entertainment system, three new colors, and trailer sway control is standard. Expedition was last redesigned for 2007.  with its combination of utility, a smooth, stable ride and a pleasant interior, the ford expedition is a fine choice for families that tow or take driving vacations.  the ford expedition comes in two lengths, the standard model with a 119-inch wheelbase, and the expedition el with its 131-inch wheelbase. Every expedition is powered by a single-overhead-cam 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 310 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment. A leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, front and rear air conditioning with rear controls, remote keyless entry, automatic headlights, alarm, an am/fm/cd stereo with mp3 player connectivity and rear controls, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, overhead console, and illuminated visors are also part of the package. Exterior standard equipment features 265/70r17 tires on alloy wheels, running boards, roof rails, fog lights, power-adjustable heated outside mirrors, a rear liftgate with flip-up glass and a rear defroster/wiper/washer system, and a keyless entry keypad.  the expedition xlt el 38,610) and xlt el 4wd 41,510) are equipped the same as standard wheelbase versions, except they come with a split-folding third-row seat and a conversation mirror.  options for xlt models include third-row bench seat 875) or power-operated third-row bench seat 1,370), leather captain's chairs 1,295), a heavy-duty towing package 395), sirius satellite radio 195), rear-seat entertainment 1,295), and a power moonroof 995). A convenience package 895) includes a reverse-sensing system, power rear quarter windows, universal garage-door opener, six-disc cd changer, and power-adjustable pedals.  the expedition eddie bauer 40,890) and eddie bauer 4wd 43,790) are trimmed as outdoor adventure vehicles and are distinguished by a longer list of convenience features as standard equipment, notably the expedition's unique power-folding split third-row seat. Other standard features include leather upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, memory for the mirrors and driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, a premium sound system with six-disc cd changer, trip computer, conversation mirror, mirror-mounted turn signals, power-adjustable pedals, and protective cladding for the lower body panels. The eddie bauer el 43,075) and eddie bauer el 4wd 45,970) are equipped, basically, like the standard-wheelbase versions.  options for eddie bauer models over and above those of the xlt include heated and cooled front seats 625), power running boards 995), a navigation system 1,995), second-row captain's chairs 795), and air suspension 485).  the expedition limited 42,660) and limited 4wd 45,560) add heated and cooled front seats, 10-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, universal garage-door opener, power rear quarter windows, and 255/70r18 tires on chrome alloy wheels. The limited el 45,310) and limited el 4wd 48,210) are equipped the same.  the expedition king ranch 45,190) and king ranch 4wd 48,090) have upgraded chaparral leather upholstery, king ranch badging, and gold exterior accents. The leather also trims the center console lid, steering wheel and door panels, while wood trim can be found on the center console, shifter handle and instrument panel. King ranch el 47,840) and king ranch 4wd el 50,740) have the same features.  safety equipment includes front airbags, torso-protecting front side airbags, three-row head-protecting side-curtain airbags with rollover deployment, tire-pressure monitor, anti-lock brakes (abs) with brake assist, and advancetrac electronic stability control with roll stability control. A rear obstacle detection system is standard on limited and king ranch, and optional on eddie bauer. Trailer sway control is standard. walkaroundthe ford expedition is a truck and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. This is a good identity to have, because ford trucks continue to have an outstanding reputation for utility, reliability and durability.  both the long and regular-length versions of the expedition use many of the components from the ford f-150 pickup. However, the expedition features independent rear suspension, which improves driving precision, ride comfort, and rear-seat roominess.  this third-generation expedition features a three-bar grille, large headlights, and a domed hood that combine to deliver a look that's both distinctive and respectable. There are several different wheel designs, including 20-inchers with a chrome finish.  expedition el models stretch the wheelbase to 131 inches. Overall, the el measures 14. 8 inches longer than the standard expedition, and that adds 22 cubic feet of cargo volume. As a result, crowded parking lots can be challenging. The expedition has a turning circle of nearly 41 feet, while the el requires 44 feet.  they're also heavy, as even the base 2wd expedition weighs almost 6,000 pounds, and a loaded el with 4wd will be comfortably over that.  the king ranch model can be identified by its gold exterior accents and unique wheel design.  the expedition comes with running boards as standard equipment. Power retractable running boards that deploy when the doors are opened are optional. Some prefer no running boards, but that doesn't appear to be an option. interiorthe ford expedition features a rich blend of finishes, textures and color. Indeed, a king ranch is the best representation of modern american-style luxury within ford's lineup. Wood, chrome and leather make the expedition an inviting place to spend a day on the road. Leather-upholstered examples are available with a heating/cooling feature that makes them a more comfortable companion in winter and summer. Generous driver's-seat travel helps accommodate taller drivers, and it's a perfect match for the expedition's movable pedals, so a wide range of sizes of drivers can sit comfortably.  the second seating row reflects ford's thoughtful approach to passenger comfort: the standard 40/20/40 bench seat incorporates a center section that slides, bringing a child seat within easier reach of front-seat passengers. Optional second-row captain's chairs with a center-aisle pass-through can be substituted for adult-rated comfort.  packaging advantages afforded by the expedition's independent rear suspension enable the third-row seat to deliver more comfort for adults compared to the accommodations provided by the chevy tahoe. In fact, third-row room is among the best of any suv, though three adults won't want to sit in the back for long. The high ride height also makes getting in and out a task for children.  the expedition's liftgate with its flip-up glass hatch makes access to the cargo area very easy. The expedition's second- and third-row bench-type seats fold flat into the cargo floor, affording a long cargo area that can be easily loaded. In this regard, the expedition is much better designed than gm's large suvs. The expedition is also available with an optional power-folding third-row seat and electronically powered liftgate to make it even easier to load cargo. However, the seat cushions of the second- and third-row seats are a little slim in order to allow the seats to fold properly.  the expedition is about more than convenience. A dvd-based navigation system with sizable 6. 5-inch screen is available as an option. The rear-seat dvd entertainment system has an eight-inch screen that flips down from the headliner and also includes two sets of wireless headphones. A plug-in jack for an mp3 player is standard acro. Its passenger-car platform makes it lower and more carlike than the Explorer or Expedition, and thus easier to drive and live with in da. It's built on a passenger-car platform, as opposed to that of a body-on-frame truck, and thus has the basic stance and friendly driving characteristics of a car. 2010 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Comprehensive line of superb pickups. introductionthe ford f-150 is the best-selling pickup in america. All are highly capable trucks, even those loaded with luxury features. The f-150 was completely redesigned for 2009. So for 2010, changes are limited to packaging.  smooth and quiet, the f-150 is comfortable on bumpy streets around town, over rugged terrain such as that found at construction sites, and on the open road. Its steering is nicely waited and requires little correction on the highway making it nice for long cross-country tows. Yet even the least-expensive f-150 isn't boring; it leaves room for customization, does the work required and keeps overhead down.  with one of the deepest beds in the segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,030 pounds. A properly equipped regular cab f-150 is rated to tow up to 11,300 pounds; other models max out in the 9,000-pound range. (the ford super duty range of heavy-duty pickups is covered in a separate new car test drive review.)  three v8 engines are offered. It is rated at 310 horsepower and 365 pound-feet on gasoline (epa 14/20 mpg) and 320 horsepower and 390 pound-feet on e85 with mileage dropped to 10/14 mpg. The mykey programmable vehicle key is standard on all models except the base xl trim level. Supercab trucks add higher fx4 and lariat trim levels, and a short-bed option (about 5. 5 feet) on all but xl models. The flareside bed can not be combined with xl or lariat supercabs. A long-bed supercab is available only with the heavy-duty 5. 4-liter package. The supercrew f-150, available with either the short or standard bed, drops the stx grade and adds king ranch and platinum derivatives.  the f-150 xl 21,380) is a standard bed, regular cab two-wheel drive. It comes with 17-inch steel wheels, black bumper/grille/mirrors, and vinyl upholstery and floor covering. More equipment is available, including 18-inch wheels, sirius radio, sync, cruise control, fog lamps and power mirrors.  xlt (from $25,575) adds chrome for bumpers and trim, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, automatic headlamps, carpeting, cruise control, power windows and locks, better cloth upholstery and, on longer cabs, the three-valve 4. 6-liter v8 and six-speed automatic transmission. All manner of options are available on the xlt, including three sizes of wheels, tailgate step, cargo management and towing equipment.  fx4 (from $35,090) comes with a black grille and body-colored bumpers, trim and mirrors. Options include infotainment and 17-inch (for more severe off-road use) or 20-inch wheels. Chrome trim and bumpers highlight monotone paint, and the lariat adds heated mirrors with signal repeaters and auto-dimming on the driver's and inside, dual-zone climate control, heated power leather seats with driver memory, leather wheel with redundant audio controls, tow package, sync, trip computer, and power adjustable pedals. Options include 20-inch wheels, heated/cooled front seats, sony sound and navigation, trailer brake controller, rear camera and park sensors, and moonroof.  king ranch (from $40,200) is like a lariat with a different attitude. It adds two-tone paint and kr badges, unique wheels, mesh chrome grille, chaparral leather heated and cooled power captain’s chairs with driver memory, running boards, and power folding, heated, signal outside mirrors with chrome caps. Options are essentially limited to a limited-slip differential, alternative axle ratios, 20-inch wheels, sony sound and navigation systems, moonroof, chrome tube running boards and remote start.  platinum supercrew (from $42,075) gets a unique satin chrome grille and the only one not styled as three sections, body-color bumpers and wheel lip moldings, 20-inch wheels, power-deploy/retract running boards, satin chrome tailgate trim, tuxedo-stitched leather power captain’s chairs, wood grain and brushed aluminum trim, rain-sensing wipers, power folding/heated mirrors, and unique console. It will start with the 310-hp 5. 4-liter v8 and later get a high-performance engine option, a 6. 2-liter v8 of about 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. But it is the long-travel high-performance suspension, wheels and tires that set it apart, and the assertive styling.  the f-150 option list is comprehensive and, although it has been simplified in recent years, it can still resemble the tax code to the uninitiated; there are, for example, three codes for a sliding rear window and five for trailer towing mirrors. Most options are dependent on the model and other options, and many features are standard on more expensive models. In addition, sometimes the prices of the options vary by trim level.  mechanical options include upgrades to either the three-valve 4. 6 engine or the 5. 4-liter, alternate axle ratios, limited-slip differential, larger tires and upgraded wheels, electric-shift 4wd, skid plates, towing mirrors, snow plow prep, trailer brake controller, 35-gallon long-bed fuel tank, tailgate step, heavy-duty payload package, and ford works systems like an in-dash computer. Other upgrades include captain's chairs bucket seats with center console, power sliding rear window, rear-view camera, reverse parking sensors, dual-coat or two-tone paint, moonroof, sirius radio, sound systems, remote start, and navigation.  safety features that come standard include antilock brakes, stability control (advancetrac rsc), trailer sway control, frontal airbags, front side airbags, and side curtain airbags. Safety-related options include an integrated trailer brake controller, rear-view camera, and reverse park sensors. walkaroundthe angular lines of the ford f-150 mean it's easier to clean, easier to park, and gives maximum inside volume for outside space. Some bulge to the hood and large grille openings imply power, as does the higher altitude of 4wd models; many models have big graphics to ensure everyone knows what it is. The view rearward can be aided by extendable towing mirrors, a rear camera, and a power sliding rear window. We found the towing mirrors work very well.  pillars between the doors (called b-pillars) and the rear hand-hold on the pillar may yield an awkward blind spot for some drivers, but everyone should appreciate the windshield pillars (called a-pillars) shaped to help preserve forward vision.

2010 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A terrific compact suv. introductionthe ford escape looks like a little truck among small suvs. Its styling reminds us of ford's larger, truck-based sport utility vehicles. The escape's ride height and seating position are a bit higher than competitors such as the honda cr-v, and it can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is substantially more than most other vehicles in the class.  yet the ford escape still delivers the advantages of unit-body, car-based competitors such as the honda cr-v. All variants, including the v6 and escape hybrid, deliver some of the best epa mileage ratings in the class. All models are offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.  for the most part, the hybrid drives just like a conventional gas-only escape. It's a well-executed package. Folding the rear seats opens a good sized cargo area with a flat floor, and space behind the seat surpasses that in the trunk of a typical sedan. There are lots of interior storage spaces, the finish is upscale and pleasing, and feature function and switches are among the best.  escape was redesigned for 2008. For 2010, changes are minor. An integrated blind spot mirror, mykey programmable vehicle key, rear view camera system, and active park assist are now available, and the escape also features hands-free sync with traffic, directions & information. All the features improve safety and reduce driver distractions.  the ford escape remains one of the more appealing vehicles in its class, regardless of price, and certainly one of the better values. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic 1,210) is optional. The hybrid limited versions are equipped similarly to the limited models, but add the hybrid powertrain. Unlike some mild hybrid suvs, the escape hybrid can run on 100 percent electric power up to about 25 mph.  safety features include front- and side-impact airbags for front occupants and curtain-type head protection airbags for all outboard seats. The side curtains can remain inflated for several seconds in the event of a rollover, and are designed to slide between the side glass and occupants if the people are oddly seated or resting heads against a window. For starters, the escape sits a bit higher than many competitors, and the high profile is enhanced by its design.  the grille looks like it was designed for a truck. The headlights are essentially connected to the grille, and shaped to create a family resemblance with ford's edge crossover suv. Yet the grille itself is tall and flat and stacked right on top of a skid plate-type fascia that flows under the bumper. The escape's beltline, or the crease that runs just under the windows, is high, too, and its roof pillars are blacked out. The taillights have a clear band that wraps around the rear corners. The lower bumpers and rocker panels are now painted to match the body on all models, rather than molded in a matte finish. In total, the effect is cleaner and more polished than previous models, and it's all quite handsome.  the side mirrors are large, but their shape generates little noise as air speeds over them. The roof, too, is designed to reduce interior noise. Recessed channels running its length are intended to move air more quietly over the surface. Horizontal ribs underneath the panel add structure, which limits flex in the metal and reduces booming noise inside at high speeds.  we're fond of a couple of features in back of the escape. A new step pad on the bumper provides secure footing for anyone who steps up to put something on the roof rack, and the two-piece tailgate is handy. The rear glass can be popped open with the key fob, so dropping small items like a gym bag into the cargo area is much easier than it might be with some competitors, which require hefting the entire gate upward. interiorthis is one of ford's best interiors in terms of the look and feel of materials used. It looked like the lacquered finish on a fine piano. The satiny black or silver used in lower trim levels isn't bad, either. Yet the highlight is a woven-look, rubberized trim on the dash and console. It looks sporty and suited to a more expensive car.  the escape features upholstery cloth made from 100-percent recycled material. Overall, though, the seats are smaller than those in a larger sport utility. Drivers with big frames might find them small. There's not an abundance of side bolstering, but that makes it easier to slide into the seats, and there's enough to keep occupants solidly in place during the type of driving a typical escape owner is likely to undertake.  the gauges are clustered in a shaded binnacle that can be absorbed in a glance: tachometer left, speedometer right, with fuel and coolant temperature in the middle, along with an easy-to-read trip- and systems-info display. We absolutely loved this, because it includes a menu that allows the driver to easily cycle through and change features such as headlight-off delay and auto-locking.  the gauges and switches feature ford's new signature backlighting style, which the company calls ice blue. No gripe here, as the bluish white is crisper and brighter than conventional green-yellow or orange lighting. The problem is the script on the gauges, and particularly the speedometer. The big vents at the ends move lots of air, and there are two more in the middle near the top of the center stack. These can be aimed to avoid blasting the driver’s hands or face with a rush of air. At the very top sits a neat display that shows compass heading, date and time, exterior temperature and, on models so equipped, the two interior temp settings.  when it comes to placement and function of switches, the escape is first rate, and examples are easy to find. When the driver rests his or her left for.
